Pearl of the West Coast - Bergen

This city, the former capital of Norway, is 1000 years old and in my opinion is one of the most charming cities in this country. Bergen lies among seven mountains (like Rome :) ) and is known for raining (you can even buy a jar with "bergensk" rain as a souvenir! ). This is due to its location between stormy Northern Sea and Norwegian high mountains.

Summer season (from May to September) is relatively dry and sunny. That is when this city is most beautiful and charming. There is a lot of cafeterias and pubs downtown, crowded with students, locals and tourists.

Among other things worth visiting here is Hanseatic quayside called Bryggen which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here is also the oldest part of the city with St. Mary's Church from 12th century, Rosenkrantz Tower from the 16th century and medieval castle Håkonshallen. You can take a funicular railway to Mt. Fløyen or a cacle car to the highest of the seven mountains, Mt. Urliken and admire the panorama of the city. Bergen is also a starting point to the fjords - long "sea valleys" captivating by their depth, narrowness and steep mountains towering above.
