Geiranger Fjord

Today we visit Geiranger Fjord, probably one of the most known and magnificent fjords, belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Here you can see world's biggest cruise ships offering people views of amazing waterfalls, breathtaking panoramas and nature at its best. The best way to get here is to take a car and start from Ålesund (100km, ca. 2h of driving) but you can also get here from Bergen (370km ca. 6h of driving). I actually did both-reached Geiranger from Ålesund and then on my way back took the Bergen route.

The road leading from Ålesund is called Ørnevegen, the Road of the Eagle and indeed, you feel like an eagle swinging on its hairpin turns and having the deep, cold waters of the fjord long way beneath you. Well, typical Norway one might say :) This is Geiranger Fjord seen from Ørnevegen:

Be careful in Spring (not to mention in Winter!), because many roads leading through the mountain regions (like the road to Bergen) can be winter-closed. Always check the latest local traffic information. I did that mistake of not checking once and had to turn around a couple of miles from my destination. Taking another route meant a couple of additional hours at the steering wheel. It was quite irritating I must admit.
